# Create a Workspace (/docs/api-reference/workspaces/create-workspace)

Workspace creation is a bootstrap operation. It requires a signed-in, non-anonymous user's bearer token; a Workspace API key cannot create the Workspace it would need to be scoped to.

The `Idempotency-Key` must be 8–200 characters. Retrying the same name with the same key returns the original Workspace with `200 OK` and `idempotent_replay: true`. Reusing the key with a different name returns `409 Conflict`.

Creation is rate limited per authenticated user. Back off before retrying a `429 Too Many Requests` response, and keep the same idempotency key for the same logical request.

The successful response includes the active Workspace, its active owner membership, and `full_access`. The Workspace and membership are committed together, so callers never receive a Workspace without its owner.
